Journal articleOverwater Villas vs Beach Villas: Which is Right for You?
The eternal Maldives dilemma — overwater villa or beach villa? We weigh up the pros and cons of each to help you make the right choice for your holiday.
By Holiday Maldives Editorial Team
One of the most common questions we receive from guests planning their first Maldives holiday is whether to choose an overwater villa or a beach villa. Both offer extraordinary experiences, but they are quite different in character, and the right choice depends on your priorities and preferences.
The Case for Overwater Villas
Overwater villas are the iconic image of the Maldives — and for good reason. Perched above a turquoise lagoon, with a private deck, a ladder into the water, and uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean, they offer an experience that is truly unique to this part of the world. Waking up to the sound of the sea beneath you, watching the sunrise from your private deck, and stepping directly into the warm, clear water from your villa are experiences that are difficult to replicate anywhere else on earth.
The best overwater villas also offer exceptional privacy — you are surrounded by water on all sides, with no neighbours to disturb your peace. Many also feature glass floors, allowing you to observe the marine life beneath you without even leaving your villa.
The Case for Beach Villas
Beach villas offer a more traditional tropical island experience, with direct access to the beach and the freedom to walk in the sand at any time of day or night. They are generally more spacious than overwater villas, with larger gardens and more outdoor living space. Beach villas are also typically better suited to families with young children, as there is no risk of falling into the water.
Many guests also find that beach villas offer a more immersive connection with the island environment — you can hear the waves, feel the sand between your toes, and experience the full sensory richness of a tropical island in a way that is sometimes harder to achieve in an overwater villa.
Our Recommendation
If this is your first visit to the Maldives and you are travelling as a couple, we would recommend an overwater villa — it is the quintessential Maldivian experience, and one that you are unlikely to forget. If you are travelling with children, or if you prefer a more spacious and grounded environment, a beach villa may be the better choice. Many resorts also offer combination packages, allowing you to spend part of your holiday in each type of accommodation.
