Six Senses Laamu vs Six Senses Kanuhura: Which Maldives Resort Should You Choose?
Six Senses operates two exceptional resorts in the Maldives, but choosing between Six Senses Laamu and Six Senses Kanuhura isn’t simply a matter of picking the better hotel. They offer noticeably different versions of the Six Senses experience.
Six Senses Laamu is the more remote, nature-led choice: an established hideaway in the southern Laamu Atoll with outstanding marine conservation, excellent snorkelling and surfing, and a wonderfully barefoot character.
Six Senses Kanuhura, meanwhile, combines the Six Senses approach to wellness and sustainability with spectacular beaches, three private islands and considerably more emphasis on families, space and resort facilities.
Neither is universally better. For many travellers, though, one will be a much better fit than the other.

The fundamental distinction
The Biggest Difference: What Kind of Maldives Holiday Do You Want?
Six Senses Laamu is about nature, ocean, remoteness and a more barefoot rhythm. Its setting rewards travellers who are content for the reef, the surf, the villa and the island’s conservation story to be the focus of the day.
Six Senses Kanuhura is more beach, space, family facilities and resort variety. It still has a relaxed island feel, but gives a larger party more ways to spread out, dine, play and use the resort.
Which Has the Better Beach?
Winner: Six Senses Kanuhura
Kanuhura has the stronger case if the beach is central to your holiday. The main island’s long sweep of sand is joined by two additional private islands, creating a sense of space and giving the stay more than one beach setting to explore.
Laamu has an excellent beach and a beautiful lagoon, but its pull is more clearly the water beyond the sand: its house reef, marine life and the natural texture of the island.
Holiday Maldives Verdict: Kanuhura for beaches; Laamu for the ocean.
Which Is Better for Snorkelling and Marine Life?
Winner: Six Senses Laamu
Laamu’s house reef is a major reason to choose it. Snorkelling can be part of an ordinary day rather than a separate boat excursion, and the island’s conservation programme gives marine-minded travellers real context for what they are seeing.
The Maldives Underwater Initiative brings together Six Senses Laamu, the Manta Trust, Blue Marine Foundation and Olive Ridley Project. Its Sea Hub for Environmental Learning in Laamu, known as SHELL, supports guest education alongside marine research, turtle monitoring, manta work and coral and seagrass protection. Kanuhura also has a resident marine-biologist and sustainability programme, but Laamu’s longer-established conservation focus is the clearer differentiator.
Which Has Better Villas?
It’s a draw — but for different reasons

Six Senses Laamu
Barefoot, open-to-the-water villa design

Six Senses Kanuhura
Generous space for family stays
Laamu
Beach and overwater villas are shaped by natural materials and a more barefoot, organic feel. Private-pool choices and romantic overwater accommodation make Laamu especially compelling for couples.
Kanuhura
Beach and overwater accommodation includes one-to-three-bedroom choices, giving families and groups more flexibility, shared space and practical sleeping configurations.
For couples: a slight preference for Laamu. For families and groups: a clear preference for Kanuhura.
Which Is Better for Families?
Winner: Six Senses Kanuhura
Kanuhura is the easier family resort. Grow With Six Senses, the Island Hideout teens club, a family game room, babysitting, watersports, two pools and Cinema Under the Stars create a broad day-to-day choice. Its multi-bedroom villas make the accommodation conversation simpler too.
Laamu can still be excellent for families who want nature, marine biology, conservation and snorkelling to be part of the holiday. The distinction is not family-friendly versus not family-friendly: Kanuhura is the more straightforward family resort, while Laamu offers the more adventurous family experience.
Which Is Better for Couples and Honeymoons?
Slight edge: Six Senses Laamu
Laamu’s remoteness, natural villas, overwater setting and slower rhythm make it especially persuasive for barefoot romance. It suits couples who want to spend more time close to the water, in their villa, on the reef or simply in the rhythm of a smaller-feeling island.
Kanuhura remains a strong couples’ choice if you want exceptional beach time, castaway moments across the three-island setting and a broader choice of places to dine, swim and spend the day. Choose Laamu for barefoot romance and escaping; choose Kanuhura for beach, facilities and greater resort variety.
What About Food?
Very close
Laamu’s dining has distinct personality, from garden-led Leaf and Japanese-influenced Zen to the broad breakfast and dinner rhythm at Longitude. Kanuhura has a wider spread across The Market, Bottega, Sip & Sand and The Point, with Drift adding a private-island lunch on Jehunuhura.
Neither needs an artificial winner. Instead, think about whether you prefer Laamu’s intimate, characterful venues or Kanuhura’s wider resort-style choice and island-hopping dining.
Which Is Better for Wellness?
Draw
Wellness is a strength of both resorts. Laamu’s spa sits naturally within its quieter, more organic island setting, while Kanuhura carries the same Six Senses wellness philosophy alongside a broader recreation offer. This is not the section that should decide the whole holiday.
Surfing: There’s a Clear Winner
Six Senses Laamu
For surfers, Laamu is the obvious choice. The famous Yin Yang break and the resort’s dedicated surf proposition are not a side note; they are one of its defining reasons to travel. If surfing matters, give Laamu a meaningful advantage in the decision.
The journey matters
Getting There
Both journeys should be confirmed for your actual dates, but the current transfer patterns help explain the different sense of remoteness.
Lhaviyani Atoll
Six Senses Kanuhura
The current standard transfer is a scenic seaplane journey of around 40 minutes from Velana International Airport. A domestic-flight and speedboat alternative may be arranged on request. The arrival feels remote, but it is the shorter of the two air journeys.
Laamu Atoll
Six Senses Laamu
Laamu is currently reached by a scenic seaplane journey of around 65 minutes from Velana International Airport. That longer southern journey is part of what gives Laamu its more removed, castaway atmosphere.
Sustainability: Six Senses Laamu Sets the Benchmark
Sustainability matters at both resorts. Kanuhura’s Earth Lab, organic and orchid gardens, sustainability tours and resident marine education give guests practical ways to engage with the island’s work.
Laamu, however, has the more mature and visible conservation programme. Its partnerships, research, turtle and manta work, coral and seagrass protection, community involvement and guest learning make sustainability a genuine part of the island’s character rather than a broad eco-luxury claim.
